When can I hear it?
Bump's heartbeat, week by week
That little heart starts early, but it takes a while before it's loud enough to find at home. Here's roughly how it goes.
6
weeks
The first flicker
Your baby's heart has started beating, though it's far too small to hear at home yet.
12
weeks
Picking up speed
The heart is beating fast, often 120 to 180 times a minute. Some people catch it now, but most need to wait a few more weeks.

Time to listen
Most parents find the heartbeat more easily from around here. Be patient: position, the placenta and wriggling all play a part.

How it works
- 1
Add a little gel
Lie back and add a coin-sized blob of Glide Gel low on your bump, just above your pubic bone.
- 2
Glide slowly
Move the probe gently and slowly, tilting it a little. The screen shows the heart rate once it picks it up.
- 3
Lub-dub!
Listen for the fast gallop. Turn it up for everyone, keep it low just for you, or record it on your phone for keeps.

Good questions
Bump FAQs
When can I hear the heartbeat?
Most parents find it more easily from around 16 weeks. Some catch it earlier, and some need a little longer. Your baby's position and where the placenta sits both make a difference, so don't worry if it takes a few tries.
Can I use it to check my baby is OK?
No. The doppler is for listening and bonding, not for checking on your baby's health, and hearing a heartbeat doesn't mean everything is fine. If you're worried, or your baby is moving less than usual, contact your midwife or maternity unit straight away, day or night. Don't wait, and don't use the doppler to decide.
How long should I listen for?
Keep sessions short, a few minutes at a time, and follow the guide in the box. If you have any questions about using it during your pregnancy, check with your midwife.
Why can't I find it?
It's really common, especially early on. Start low on your bump, use plenty of gel and move the probe very slowly, tilting it as you go. A slower whooshing sound is usually your own pulse. Your baby's heartbeat is much faster, like a gallop.
What if it's not for us?
Use it for up to 30 nights. If it's not for you, send it back for a full refund. We'll even email you the returns label.
How quickly will it arrive?
Orders are sent by tracked delivery and usually arrive in 1–3 working days. Delivery is free on orders over £40. You'll get an email with tracking as soon as it's on its way.
